Thank you for all your recommendations yesterday! If you have any more, please do share them! I’m taking the time to check them all out. It feels like just listening to one song randomly would be pointless though, so I’m doing my best to listen to a full album from each of your recommended artists. I haven’t gotten very far along with this project yet, but so far it has all sounded cool.

By the way, one band that I often listen to is The Beach Boys. Other famous bands I sometimes listen to are The Beatles, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, and King Crimson. I still don’t know very much about rock… and that’s why I feel like I need to learn more!

Music genres can be so confusing. Like, I don’t really even understand what makes rock “rock.” I don’t really get what people mean when they say, “this song rocks so hard!” That’s why I feel like listening to lots of rock music. I get to sing lots of different kinds of songs in Hello! Project, so I feel like it’s my duty as a singer to study up on these things…

Wanting to talk to them, wanting to be friends with them, wanting to be recognized by them — I just don’t get any of that. I think they shine when they’re performing up on stage, but off-stage, I see them as being just like any other girls.

“In the beginning, almost nothing was fun or pleasant. It was all painful.”

There was a misunderstanding that Niigaki had been able to join the group because of “special considerations.” Some fans took these negative rumors about her and began spreading them as if they were true. With broadband providers such Softbank Japan and Yahoo!BB entering the market, the year 2001 was one where the internet as a whole had already begun to become widely available in Japan, and online bashing towards Niigaki became very rampant. Even when the group was on stage, things like inconsiderate heckling and booing towards her would persist for a long while.

At the time, Niigaki was only 12 years old.

“There was this one concert where it was especially obvious that I hadn’t been accepted by the fans, and both my parents happened to be in the audience that time. After the concert ended, the three of us had a talk and we made a decision. “Let’s stop this already.” But after we talked it over with the staff, they convinced us to give it one more try. I then came to notice how there were some fans who supported me. There really weren’t a lot of them, but there were a couple — just a few people that supported me.”

Niigaki: Some time ago I was doing a shoot for a TV program where they had pictures from the times of our respective debuts lined up, and I realized how the members in them all looked different depending on the era. I don’t just mean our makeup and our hairstyles, but the whole “feel” of the pictures themselves.

20 years… It really is a piece of history. I was a member of the group for half of that — 10 years. The beginning was so incredibly difficult for me, but I think if I had to choose, it was the latter half of my time as a member that left the bigger impression on me. This was when we were the seniors; when our seniors had all left and it was up to just me and Ai-chan to take responsibility of Morning Musume. That was the era of my Morning Musume life that to me felt the most profound.

— You joined the group in 2001. “The☆Peace!” was a hit and the group was smack in the middle of its Golden Era.

Niigaki: I loved Morning Musume. My first impression of them was that it was this group of older girls singing really cool, mature songs, and then when the 4th generation joined I came to like them even more since they were around the same age as me. That’s when I first started going to their concerts, too. You couldn’t apply to their auditions until you were in junior high school, so I just waited patiently until that day and I let my parents know I wanted to apply.
