When the current members are singing it on TV or in concert, they all try to sound so cutesy that it’s like they’re singing it in 100% idol mode. Because of that, I just assumed that’s the kind of song it is. But listening to the original, the vocals are actually amazingly cool.

(Sayumi was a guest at the Fukuoka Hello! Con. There was a listener question asking her about stories from that concert. Kamiko regrets having been absent on this day due to influenza as she didn’t get to see her senior’s performance…)

Michishige: Also, Maa was constantly coming in to the dressing room!

Kamikokuryo & Kasahara: Aaah! (laughs)

Michishige: Fufufu. Like, whenever a Morning Musume OG member appears as a guest, she visits pretty much all of their dressing rooms. It’s a given. And so like then that OG’s Instagram page will be filled with pictures of Sato. (laughs)

Kamikokuryo & Kasahara: Ah. (laughs)

Michishige: Yeah. Maa-chan was really good friends with Reina when she was a member, so seeing them in conversation felt so nostalgic to me. Like, when me and Reina meet up, or when I meet with Sato, it’s just like, “long time no see.” But with Reina and Sato, it’s like… It’d been such a long time since I’d seen them talk like that, and their conversation just felt so nostalgic to me. It made me feel all warm inside.

Kasahara: Ahh.

Kamikokuryo: That’s so nice. (laughs)

Michishige: Fufufu. But yeah, Sato really is completely out of control. She even took pictures of me while I was changing! (laughs)

Kamikokuryo & Kasahara: Huuuuuh!?

Kasahara: That’s crazy! (laughs) She can’t do that! (laughs)

Michishige: I swear! I was like, “SERIOUSLY, STOP IT!“

Kamikokuryo: Fufufufu.

Kasahara: Yeah. (laughs)

Michishige: Like… (laughs) She was just laughing about it. (laughs) She showed me the pictures of me changing while going all, “Minishige-san, look!” (laughs)

Kamikokuryo & Kasahara: Ahahahaha.

Michishige: So I went, “DELETE THOSE PICTURES RIGHT HERE IN FRONT OF ME!” (laughs)

Kamikokuryo & Kasahara: Ahahahahaha.

Kasahara: That’s so funny. (laughs)

Michishige: Yeah, well. I just thought, “she hasn’t changed.” I guess I was relieved to know that Maa-chan hasn’t changed a bit. (laughs)

Kamikokuryo & Kasahara: Ahahahaha.

(On the topic of being told by her manager to blog more.)

Sanma: Is it a bother?

Sato: It’s not that. It’s because they make me do so many corrections. It’ll take me 5 or 10 minutes to write a post, but then I’ll have to spend 2 hours fixing it!

Iikubo: But it takes the rest of us an hour to write a post, too.

Sato: But for me it takes two hours and ten minutes. I just think it’s such a waste of time for me to have to be there with my phone in hand for two whole hours.

Iikubo: So why not just spend an hour to write it properly in the first place?

Sanma: You don’t want them to correct your blog posts?

Sato: It’s all stuff like… “Why don’t you put a question mark here?” It’s like, is that really necessary? They’ll interfere with stuff that’s totally not important at all.

Sanma: But you’re an idol — you’re a Morning Musume. You have to write them properly.

Sato: The other day they asked me, “Sato, do you mind if we delete this part of your post?” So then I went, “Just delete the whole thing then.” I told them that, if they were to delete a part of it, to me it would’ve felt the same as if they’d deleted the whole thing.

Sanma: Maybe you don’t quite fit in the framework of Morning Musume.

Sato: When I’m seriously told things like that, it’s… Like, they tell me it’s okay to just write freely what I feel, but lately most of my posts aren’t even my own writing.

Sanma: Huuuuuuuh?! (laughs)

Sato: Like that post about the auditions on our Instagram, pretty much everything I wrote for that was changed.

Sanma: They want to let you write freely, but they’re also afraid that what you write might get in the way of Morning Musume’s success.

Sato: As of late, pretty much nothing in my posts is my own writing.

Sanma: The office won’t allow it.

Sato: It’s not that I even write anything too crazy. But lately I just tell them to do with my posts as they like.

I only learned who Sayashi was and became a fan in 2018. Sayashi is the only idol I like, so I don’t quite even get the whole “oshi-hen” thing of idol culture.

I, too, discovered and became a fan of Sayashi in the fall of 2017. Up until then, the only H!P artist I’d properly listened to was Matsuura Aya. Sayashi’s appeal to me is how she just puts her everything into her performances — both in her singing as well as her dancing.

In the current Morning Musume, the person who feels the closest to that for me is Ishida Ayumi-chan, so I think I’ll remain a dedicated fan of hers until her graduation… because I don’t think Sayashi is ever going to make her return to the stage.

It feels like she was actually surprisingly athletic. Though now that I think about it, everyone in the 5th gen was athetlic. But Konno was smart, too.

At the time, everyone in the group was all about pushing their way to the front 24/7. Konno was the only gentle, quiet type, so she got all the fans who were longing for that type of girl. In the beginning she used to be written off as just another member who was no good at singing or dancing or anything else, and yet it turned out that she was actually smart and fit… She was like the honor student of the group.
