@tsunkuboy There’s a thread where they’re discussing your music from the perspective of music otaku. “I was just your ordinary music lover until suddenly I now find that I’ve become an H!P wota.“
H: Tsunku himself actually retweeted the above. Below is the thread that was linked to him.

You guys, too?
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:00:30.43 ID:i
Same here. I love Tsunku’s songs so much.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:00:31.56 ID:0
I’ve listened to everything from Benny Goodman to James Blake, but Terada Mitsuo is the greatest of them all.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:01:35.71 ID:0
He’s a genius.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:06:52.69 ID:0
It’d be great even if it was just the songs themselves that were good, but the members make them something even greater than the recorded versions when they sing them live. That’s why I’m hooked.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:07:45.90 ID:0
I love H!P’s taste. Songs like Pyokotra are too awesome.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:08:48.16 ID:0
There sure seem to be a lot of folks who know their music that also praise Pyokotra.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:08:17.21 ID:0
Honestly, anyone who loves music can’t ignore Tsunku♂.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:09:59.48 ID:0
We live in an era where music won’t sell even if it’s good.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:10:57.03 ID:0
It’s the perfect blend of super catchy melodies, strangely memorable lyrics, and absurd arrangements.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:11:44.08 ID:O
You might’ve convinced yourself that you’re a music lover, but honestly, the guys that do end up at H!P probably didn’t listen to music that many would agree was any good at all to begin with.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:12:36.00 ID:0
Perhaps so, but at least in my own opinion I did listen to a lot of different kinds of music without any prejudice.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:14:20.20 ID:0
I listen to everything from Ikimonogakari to Mahler. Is that not enough?
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:16:19.97 ID:0
I really do feel that while I am an H!P wota, I’m not an idol wota.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:18:03.43 ID:0
I’m an H!P wota but I prefer Buono’s songs.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:20:47.06 ID:0
I don’t think it’s going to happen, but assuming someone tried to write a song that sounded like TROUT MASK REPLICA with some idol lyrics slapped on top of it, Tsunku is pretty much the only person who could actually make it work. (laughs)
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:22:45.74 ID:0
Yeah. He seems like he might try doing that just for the fun of it. He’s like the Captain Beefheart meets Frank Zappa meets The Beatles of the Japanese music world.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:23:54.44 ID:0
Honestly, for me he’s a melody maker on a level where it wouldn’t be saying too much even if you were to call him the Paul McCartney of Osaka.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:25:43.44 ID:0
I think Hatsukoi Cider’s a pretty good song, but it’s like any AKB or Judy and Mary song in that nothing feels different about it.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:29:32.35 ID:0
Hatsukoi Cider is just your usual girls band song. Not that I’m saying there’s anything wrong with it.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:30:14.27 ID:0
Yeah. It’s a good song, but there’s nothing new about it. In other words, it’s going to be lost in the annals of music history. On the other hand, it feels like Tsunku♂’s songs will still be appreciated even 20 years from now. He’s constantly challenging new things.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:25:54.52 ID:0
He’d already set himself apart from all the rest with Love Machine.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:28:45.83 ID:0
My friend who’s a music lover was saying it’s funny how when he sings H!P at karaoke, he can tell the arranger of the karaoke versions really goes all out in making them.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:29:18.68 ID:0
From Primal Scream to H!P.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:29:50.01 ID:0
Right now it’s S/mileage that Tsunku’s really into writing for, right?
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:30:06.06 ID:0
Who cares if it sells or not. He’s great because he likes to challenge things. There are exceedingly few songwriters in the major scene right now who write songs that are so different.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:32:23.40 ID:0
Tsunku♂’s songs are like leather shoes. When you first wear them, they don’t really fit so they kind of hurt. But with time, as you get used to them, the uncomfortableness gradually disappears until suddenly you find that you can wear them just fine.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:41:42.47 ID:0
I’m so stealing this expression.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:34:51.22 ID:0
The president of Tower Records was also saying on radio about how he’d listened to all kinds of music first before finally arriving at idol songs. Apparently it’s fun for him how it mixes funk, rock and all kinds of different genres.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:36:16.34 ID:0
He also said that one day after he came back from work feeling exhausted, he turned on the TV, saw Tsuji-chan, thought she was really cute, and that’s how he got hooked. So which is it? (laughs)
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:40:34.09 ID:0
Probably both. But he kinda just strikes me as a lolicon. Apparently Marty Friedman decided he was going to move to Japan when he heard Matsuura’s “Momoiro Kataomoi” playing at a convenience store. He, too, just feels like a lolicon to me though.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:44:07.19 ID:0
Well, he might be, but Matsuura’s songs seriously never grow stale. They still sound awesome even now. They have this impression of sounding really aged because of the waning popularity of Matsuura herself, but when you actually listen to them, they don’t sound that way at all.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:37:09.13 ID:0
His songs are avant garde and messed up as is, but it’s the fact that for some reason it’s teenage girls singing on top of those songs that makes it so crazy — in a good way.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:39:37.85 ID:0
This. It’d be nonsensical, but the powerful melodies along with the simple yet memorable lyrics somehow make it work. The fact that he’s been able to do that for 15 consecutive years is just insane.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:38:04.76 ID:0
I tried checking out other idols and it just served as a reminder to me that H!P really is idols produced by real musicians.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:41:23.69 ID:0
While it’s not fair to talk about Tsunku♂ songs without also mentioning the arrangers, I have to say that Ookii Hitomi is just a great song in so many ways.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:41:54.94 ID:0
What’s fun about H!P is how they mix so many different styles of music without a care in the world — and then they force idols to sing on top of it all.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:44:50.03 ID:0
Even the members must think to themselves, “damn that Tsunku for giving us another weird song like this…” It’s too early to give music like that to some teens with no understanding of music.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:50:46.26 ID:0
They probably do, yeah.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:47:22.21 ID:0
Three years ago I thought I’d make a mix CD with just the H!P songs I really love. It ended up becoming 4 CD’s with about 21 songs on each one with no repeated songs. Even now I still often listen to it in my car. That’s pretty awesome when you think about it.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:52:09.61 ID:0
I have a “best of H!P” playlist with 300 songs on it that I listen to on random. It’s so damn good.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:48:36.25 ID:0
With the succession of poor songs he was putting out I was sure Tsunku’s time had passed.
And then he comes out with Uchouten LOVE.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:50:19.56 ID:0
For me that was a miraculous song born out of his love towards S/mileage and its members.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:49:51.30 ID:0
If you tell someone who fancies themselves as a “true” music lover that you love H!P, they’ll immediately start making fun of you for it. I can’t stand people like that who won’t even give something a chance before deciding it’s worthless.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:50:49.88 ID:0
Tachiagaaru, Miniskirt Postwoman and Choto Mate are all really good.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:52:53.76 ID:0
I don’t think singing is the essence of what idols are about or anything, but as long as their producer is a musician they won’t be able to stop being fixated on it. It’s like Tsunku’s stance doesn’t fit with the times. On the other hand, that’s also what’s good about them. Tsunku himself is probably aware of this dilemma, right?
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:53:32.27 ID:0
Those who can’t stand Tsunku’s songs can’t stand them no matter what, so it can’t be helped.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:55:46.02 ID:0
I was completely devoted to UK rock, but for some reason Tsunku’s songs have become a habit for me. Buono I haven’t really given a proper listen to but lately they interest me, too.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:56:50.05 ID:0
When I see the AKB wota here stirring things up, I just think to myself… yeah, AKB does have good songs. I can admit that. But there’s nothing that makes you get hooked on them.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:02:23.94 ID:0
I do think AKB’s songs are good quality idol songs, but nothing about them goes beyond that. Nothing about them is thrilling.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:58:02.93 ID:0
AKB’s songs lack substance.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:58:26.71 ID:0
My journey: classical → 80’s J-pop → 90’s Western rock, heavy rock & heavy metal, alternative → 90’s house, techno, hip hop, reggae, jazz → H!P.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 08:58:55.31 ID:0
AKB’s songs are painfully kindergarten level in both melody and rhythm. Their new song is simpler than Kaeru no Uta.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:00:27.98 ID:0
AKB’s songs are like the polar opposite of H!P’s songs. It’s like they put 98% of the effort into the chorus.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:00:38.24 ID:0
The first time I heard Baisekou Daiseikou, I seriously thought it’d been written by a complete lunatic.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:03:45.50 ID:0
I get that. (laughs) Sometimes I get worried that Tsunku♂ might’ve gone completely insane.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:00:47.35 ID:0
It’s weird how sad Uchouten LOVE sounds.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:01:43.07 ID:0
The lyrics, yeah. The song itself sounds recklessly upbeat. (laughs)
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:03:01.78 ID:0
Really? For me, Tsunku’s melodies often sound really sad when they’re set against those cheerful lyrics.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:03:57.15 ID:i
Yeah. I feel that way especially with Koko ni Iruzee and Koi wo Shichaimashita.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:06:02.91 ID:0
It’s not by Tsunku, but Mano-chan’s Summer Party seriously almost makes me cry.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:02:35.74 ID:0
Same here. The feeling of sadness creeps up on me so fast when listening to that.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:07:29.19 ID:0
The frequent gimmicks are fun, too. Sometimes when I hear them I’ll be thinking to myself like “wait, you’re really going to do that!?” Like the unexpected modulation for that one phrase in Genki-kun, the skipping on Makeruna Wasshoi, the spoken words, the screams…
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:07:35.21 ID:0
Tsunku’s songs are different from what the general public wants. It’s always been that way, even during the Golden Era. That’s what makes him innovative. I want him to always stay sincere and not try to suck up to the listener. Every now and then I want him to deliver songs that make you feel anger and sadness.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:12:36.85 ID:0
Being able to hear a sound like that of Busu Tetsu or Aa, Yo ga Akeru in this day and age is a miracle in itself.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:12:51.92 ID:0
The public might treat him like he’s yesterday’s news, but Tsunku♂ does have a sincerity towards music that he refuses to compromise on.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:19:35.76 ID:0
No one but Tsunku♂ could write a song like Dokusenyoku.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:21:43.39 ID:0
There are so many songs that feel like they could’ve been written only by Tsunku♂.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:23:41.42 ID:0
H!P’s songs seriously have this crazy intensity about them. I don’t even really know what I mean by that myself, but I don’t know any better word to describe it.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:27:13.05 ID:0
Pyokotra might seem like a silly song, but it has a good melody, it has that glitchy rhythm that was popular in late 90’s, early 00’s and it was written to closely resemble something like electronica or breakcore. Nowadays when people speak of techno it’s something like Perfume most of the time, but they’re so monotonous and stale. In this context, something like Pyokotra goes way beyond.
It might’ve been fun to have like a hardcore, Venetian Snares-ish version of it as the B-side, but maybe even the wota wouldn’t have gotten it if they’d went that far.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:29:13.69 ID:0
People on this board are always talking about the sales, but honestly, as a listener I couldn’t care less about it. You’ll find people playing tiny places in Shimokita that are overwhelmingly much better than some of the people who regularly appear on TV.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:30:21.51 ID:0
But when it gets to a certain point, you almost start feeling sorry for the performers. You worry about when they’re going to disappear. (laughs)
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:32:06.19 ID:0
True, there’s that. But I just don’t want people to think that it has anything to do with the quality of the music. Sales has more to do with marketing strategy than anything else.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:31:33.43 ID:0
I want to hear Tsunku’s demo vocal version of Pyokotra. Uchouten’s was pretty good.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:47:36.16 ID:0
I think Tsunku♂ was quite influenced by the Urusei Yatsura songs. I wonder who wrote those?
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:49:22.21 ID:0
The first time I heard Gag 100, I thought it was a Lum ripoff. (laughs)
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:52:37.34 ID:0
Listening to songs like Uchuu wa Taihen da, Lum no Love Song and Hoshizora Cycling, it feels like there are some similarities to H!P. I think he might’ve been influenced by them.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:01:17.01 ID:0
Just looked it up. Apparently someone called Kobayashi Izumi arranged those Urusei Yatsura songs. There’s also a song called “I, I, You & Ai” — very similar to that one Tanpopo song.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:49:47.62 ID:0
Like a hodgepodge of old anime songs, kayou kyoku, enka, The Beatles, and funk music.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 09:55:16.52 ID:0
If you listen to the songs, it’s easy to understand why middle-aged guys of Tsunku’s generation like his music.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:04:28.10 ID:0
Frank Zappa, Beck, Tsunku♂ — any other people who share their kind of genealogy?
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:06:53.28 ID:0
Brian Wilson and — I expect to get flamed for this — Norman Cook.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:12:11.49 ID:0
Beach Boys and Fatboy, huh! I don’t really know either so I’ll give them a listen.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:10:05.82 ID:0
Mark Coyne of Flaming Lips might be quite close, too.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:05:57.73 ID:0
Why did I end up becoming such an H!P wota? If I don’t stop going to the events soon, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to escape…
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:19:10.39 ID:0
There’s no doubt that in the future Tsunku♂ will be thought of as like a deity. I think if it wasn’t for Tsunku♂, the music of Japan would’ve been quite different. AKB might not have ever happened either.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:20:16.07 ID:0
I definitely don’t think he’ll be thought of as a deity, but that’s more because of his lyrics than his songs.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:23:39.69 ID:0
Maybe “deity” is the wrong word. He’ll be like this sort of an icon who put the fun in music and idols.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:28:15.95 ID:0
To me it’s more like he put the idols in music. I think Tsunku♂ considers himself a music producer more than anything else.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:22:40.73 ID:0
Tsunku was able to be so free because of Pink Lady and, while I don’t want to say it, because of Akimoto in the Onyanko days. Especially Pink Lady’s songs like Monster, Toumei Ningen and Southpaw were just way out there. (laughs)
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:24:53.69 ID:0
Love Machine is similar to Monster.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:26:54.73 ID:0
Apparently the opening theme of Haruhi used Berryz as an inspiration.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:29:59.68 ID:0
Zappa, Jeff Beck, Ozzy, King Crimson, Nirvana, Primus, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tchaikovsky and H!P.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:35:30.87 ID:0
At the end of the day we’re all just Tsunku wota.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:42:15.86 ID:0
Seeing this you’ll understand that it’s fundamentally cool music.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:43:28.57 ID:0
First of all, she’s just ridiculously good. (laughs)
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:46:30.63 ID:0
What the hell is up with her suppleness? (laughs)
。。 2012/02/25(土) 10:47:31.86 ID:0
Looks like Marlena Shaw. She’s cool.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 11:23:13.10 ID:0
I do have both likes and dislikes when it comes to Tsunku’s songs, but none of them ever feel old for me. Even now I can listen to the early songs no problem, whereas if you listen to Onyanko Club now, many of their songs sound so ancient. That might be the difference between Tsunku who doesn’t think about the times, and Akimoto who doesn’t think about anything but the times.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 11:24:08.50 ID:0
Akimoto doesn’t write anything but the lyrics, and besides, the lyrics are close to 30 years old now. Isn’t it obvious that they’d sound old?
。。 2012/02/25(土) 11:14:47.75 ID:0
He actually is capable of writing normal songs. He just refuses to do so. (laughs)
If you trust the credits, this was Tsunku + Yuuichi.
I want Sayashi and Daaishi to do this.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 11:16:09.21 ID:0
Inaba-san really did have so much potential.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 11:23:21.87 ID:0
It’s odd to me how easy H!P’s songs are to listen to. My ears are kind of weak in that I can only really listen to about one album before the insides of my ears start to hurt, but I can listen to H!P for two or three hours without any problem at all. On the other hand, classical or jazz mostly just bores me or makes me fall asleep. H!P is the only thing with just the right, moderate amount of stimulus and no sounds that cause my ears discomfort.
。。 2012/02/25(土) 11:34:42.73 ID:0
That’s very interesting.

AKB itself is something innovative, but musically they’re so safe it’s boring. Tsunku gets criticized a lot these days, but ask yourself this: does AKB have anything as high quality as early Musume? Or early Tanpopo or Matsuura? I think the answer is no. I don’t think AKB cares about that kind of stuff much.

It’s kind of pointless to bring up Akimoto in a discussion about idol pop when he can only write lyrics. What he is is really good at creating things; no more, no less. Only the thing about AKB is, because it feels like so much like they bribed their way into where they are right now, that gets them a lot of antis, too.

The songs are good, but what’s wonderful to me is how the lyrics are about love & peace. The average artist offers a narrower viewpoint as they only get as far as the love part, but in Tsunku’s lyrics the love leads into peace, making the songs feel both grand and euphoric. If they were just ordinary love songs, the people not into that kind of thing would feel put off, but when it’s love and peace? Even people like that can listen to them.

Which era of Tsunku are you saying is good? Because for me Tsunku’s songs nowadays are shit and it’s obvious he’s half-assing them.

All eras of Tsunku♂. Although it might be true that the arrangements aren’t modern enough lately.

Tsunku’s songs right now are too strange and they don’t fit with the times. Maybe they’ll be appreciated ten years from now? (laughs) The problem is that idols kind of need to sell like right now though.

I was shocked the first time I heard Love Machine. I was like, “is this really an idol song?“

I started watching old Berryz PV’s after reading the thread yesterday where that Momoclo wota was struck by how awesome Gag 100 is. They’re all great songs, but more than that, just the simple fact that Tsunku wrote “Semi” is enough for me to keep worshiping him forever.

Yeah. Seriously, just the fact that Tsunku wrote all those early Berikyuu songs makes him God tier. Even now I still don’t make fun of him, just because of those songs.

I only heard Berryz’ debut song afterwards, but it was still startling. I only had this loli image of them so I’d never have thought they’d debuted with a song like that. He must’ve really been quite serious about the group. It also feels like he wrote it while thinking he’s going to keep the group going all the way until the song finally actually fits them.

Ananashi plus the whole first album were both astonishing. The guy’s just crazy. I don’t think anyone else could make an album like that even if they wanted to.

If you were to ask which of all H!P units, past or present, offers the closest embodiment of the “Tsunku world“… I think it might well be Berryz.

Yep, Berryz. After them? S/mileage, I think.

It’s like with Berikyuu, Tsunku♂ doesn’t feel an urgency to make them a huge success. The songs he writes for them just sound like they’re closer to what he himself personally likes. Particularly for Berryz, it’s like he just wants to create the type of vocal group he likes. That’s why there’s so much emphasis on their singing.

It’s quite common to hear about people who like Western music getting hooked on H!P. Maybe the fact that some foreigners, too, end up hooked on H!P means that there is a connection of some kind.

I want Tsunku♂ and his arrangers to keep listening to more and more of all kinds of different music and keep throwing their best at us. I still expect a lot of great things from them.
Henkka: I’ve mentioned I enjoy translating threads like this, but that is an understatement. You don’t understand. I literally almost get sexual pleasure from threads like this. Almost.
Optional: In these threads 2ch often talks about what artists they like outside of H!P. I find that stuff pretty interesting, but simple lists of just names can be boring to go through. Thus, if you want, post one song (just one) of whatever non-idol music you enjoy listening to lately so we can get some idea of what types of music H!P fans, or at least the readers of this site, like. Here, I’ll start.
